On April 14, 2023, I presented at the Excellence in Online Learning Conference together with Ms. Nicole Nicholson, Dr. Julio Ciller, and Dr. Bradley Christoffersen. We presented on our use of Hypothes.is in our different courses. With faculty from diverse disciplines including linguistics, writing, Spanish, and Biology, we were able to showcase many different ways to use this tool in classes. I also reviewed survey data from my students about their experience using the software.
Hypothes.is is similar to Perusall. In both cases, you will upload a pdf, video, podcast, or website, and students will be able to annotate (write comments) on the text. It is called social annotation, because they are able to see each others' annotations and respond to them. I really had overwhelmingly positive experiences using this platform with my students. I always ask them to annotate with at least one question. The student annotations are a great springboard for class discussions.
