I am an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. I am also a Special Advisor for the Office for Bilingual Integration and an affiliate for the Mexican American Studies program.
I hold a PhD in Second Language Acquisition & Teaching from the University of Arizona and a masters in English Language/Linguistics from the University of Arizona.
My primary research interests are sociolinguistics, bilingualism, and language learning, through the use of ethnographic, qualitative, and discourse analytic methodologies. ​In general, my research explores the social aspects of language use and language learning in communities and in the classroom.
I have experience teaching a variety of courses related to sociolinguistics, including topics such as discourse analysis, language & culture, and border languages.
