I am the Associate Vice Provost for the Office for Bilingual Integration and an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. I am also an affiliate for the Mexican American Studies program.
I hold a PhD in Second Language Acquisition & Teaching from the University of Arizona and a masters in English Language/Linguistics from the University of Arizona.
My primary research interests are sociolinguistics, bilingualism, and language learning, through the use of ethnographic, qualitative, discourse analytic, and mixed methods approaches. In general, my research explores the social aspects of language use and language learning in communities and in the classroom.
I have experience teaching a variety of courses related to sociolinguistics, including topics such as discourse analysis, language & culture, and border languages.
